22nd Biennial Conference on Balkan and South Slavic
Linguistics,
Literature and Folklore
The 22nd biennial
conference on Balkan and South Slavic Linguistics, Literature and Folklore will
be hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH from Thursday April 7 - Sunday
April 10, 2022.
Due to
uncertainties about COVID-related safety and possible difficulties or
uneasiness participants may have about travel, both domestic and international,
to Columbus, we have decided to hold the conference virtually, entirely on-line
via Zoom. It is not ideal, we realize,
but a virtual conference has the advantage of guaranteeing that we can indeed
hold a robust and intellectually stimulating gathering, and doing it this way will
maximize participation. We will also
explore various avenues for socializing via virtual modalities.
We also
hereby extend the deadline for the submission of abstracts; they are now due by
11:59pm (Eastern Time, i.e. as in New York City) October 22, 2021
Other aspects about the
conference remain the same:
a. There will be two keynote speakers:
Victor Friedman (University of Chicago)
Andrey Sobolev (Marburg University), delivering the 2022
Kenneth E. Naylor Memorial Lecture
b. The last attempt to hold this conference, at Arizona
State University in 2020, was derailed due to the pandemic and the conference ultimately
was cancelled. Accordingly, by way of compensation, we have decided to
“grandfather” in papers that had been accepted for the 2020 conference and also
make room for new papers. Thus, if you
were on the program for the Arizona State conference, and if your paper has not
yet been published anywhere, you are welcome, if you like, to submit the same
paper you would have presented in Arizona; we ask only that you (re-)submit an
abstract for it in the manner required for this conference.
c. Your paper should treat some aspect of Balkan and/or South Slavic
linguistics, literature, folklore, or culture.
Abstracts should be submitted through
EASYCHAIR:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=bssc22
Abstracts should be no more than one page long, with a second
page for data, graphics, bibliography, and the like; please use a 12-point font
and allow at least 1" margins. The abstracts do *not* need to be
anonymized.
Please submit your abstract by 11:59pm
(Eastern Time, i.e. as in New York City) October 22, 2021. Notification of selection, as well as
invitation letters if needed, will be sent by November 22.
The conference is sponsored
by the Center for Slavic and East European Studies at The Ohio State University
and by the Kenneth E. Naylor Professorship of South Slavic Linguistics.
Questions about the conference may be
directed to the conference organizers, Brian Joseph and Andrea Sims, at

The conference website (still under
construction but to be updated and populated with useful information in the
coming months) can be accessed at https://u.osu.edu/bssc/.
