The Balkan Language Initiative

American Councils for International Education announces its Summer 2014, Fall 2014, and Academic Year 2014-15 language study programs in the Balkans. The Balkan Language Initiative Program features language and cultural immersion in:
- Tirana, Albania
- Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Skopje, Macedonia
- Belgrade, Serbia

THE PROGRAM
The Balkan Language Initiative provides participants with intensive individualized instruction in the languages of the Balkans. Courses are designed to strengthen speaking, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in the language of study. Classes are conducted in small groups or private tutorials by native speakers with extensive experience teaching foreign students. In addition to classroom learning, American Councils emphasizes language immersion outside of the academic program through: volunteer opportunities, cultural excursions, extracurricular activities, and life with host families. U.S. undergraduate or graduate credit is provided through Bryn Mawr College.

ARCS RESIDENTIAL FELLOWSHIP FOR SOUTHEAST EUROPEAN SCHOLARS

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: "Fellowship for Southeast European Scholars" The American Research Center in Sofia seeks PhD candidates for a research fellowship position focusing on the Balkans and Southeast Europe, Sofia, Bulgaria; Academic Year 2014-2015 (Application Deadline: October 15, 2013) 
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: "Fellowship for Southeast European Scholars"


THE PROGRAM: The American Research Center in Sofia invites applications for its new "Residential Fellowship for Southeast European Scholars". The Fellowship is available to PhD candidates and young postdoctoral scholars whose research specialties are in archaeology, history, art/architectural history, cultural anthropology/ethnography, museum studies, or cultural heritage management with a geographic focus on the Balkans (prehistory to present day).


The Fellowship gives 24/7 access to the ARCS Library, access to ARCS resources and expertise, and involves participation in the ARCS Lecture Series and academic excursions. This Fellowship is for a period of three months,February 1 - April 30, 2014, and includes accommodation in Sofia, a monthly stipend of $350, travel expenses related to our academic excursions; Fellows will be reimbursed up to $150 for their round-trip travel from their place of residence to Sofia.


ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be citizens of one of the seven countries of southeastern Europe served by ARCS: Bulgaria, Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Republic of Macedonia, Romania and Serbia. Pre-doctoral applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program in SE Europe. Postdoctoral applicants will have completed their degree in the last 8 years (2005 or later) and should hold a position or be independent researchers in SE Europe. English proficiency is required.


APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Please complete the application form, renaming it to include your surname, and send it electronically as a WORD file or PDF. Two letters from scholars in the field commenting on the value and feasibility of the project should be sent separately. All application materials must be in English and emailed to Professor Eric De Sena (sofiadirector@arcsofia.org). The application deadline for this competition is October 15, 2013.

2012-2013 Dissertation Fellowships in East European Studies

The American Council of Learned Societies announces Dissertation Fellowships in East European Studies Competition Year 2012-2013 - Research fellowships for use in Eastern Europe - Writing fellowships for writing the dissertation in the United States after research is complete Applications will be accepted for work related to Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Kosovo/a, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Applicants must be pursuing a Ph.D. degree at a U.S. university. All requirements for the PhD except the dissertation (ABD) must be completed by June 2013. All topics, periods, and approaches in the humanities and social sciences are welcome. Application deadline: November 15, 2012 Further information is available at http://www.acls.org/programs/eesp. NCEEER was created in 1978 to develop and sustain long-term, high-quality programs for post-doctoral research on the social, political, economic, environmental, and historical development of Eurasia and Central and Eastern Europe. From broad, cross-cultural analyses to more focused studies of particular problems, NCEEER supports research projects that facilitate a mutually beneficial exchange of information between scholars and policy-makers and contribute to a better understanding of current developments and future prospects in the post-communist countries of Europe and Eurasia.

The American Council of Learned Societies has revised the guidelines and application instructions for our Title VIII-sponsored East European Language, Conference and Travel Grants.

2010-2011 Funding for Research and Language Training in South Eastern Europe

Title VIII Southeast European Research Scholar Program:

Provides full support for U.S. graduate students, faculty, and post-doctoral scholars seeking to conduct research for three to nine months in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia. Scholars may apply for support for research in more than one country during a single trip, provided they intend to work in the field for a total of three to nine months. Annual deadline: October 1st 2009.

Title VIII Southeast European Language Training Program:

Provides fellowships for graduate students, faculty, and scholars to study language for a semester, academic year or summer in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia. Open to students at the MA and Ph.D. level, as well as post-doctoral scholars and faculty, who have at least elementary language skills. Annual deadline: October 1st 2009.


Funding for these programs is available through American Councils from the U.S. Department of State’s Title VIII Program for Research and Training onEastern Europe and Eurasia (Independent States of the Former Soviet Union). All competitions for funding are open and merit based. All applications will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, marital status, political affiliation, or disability.
