American Councils for International Education announces its Summer 2014, Fall 2014, and Academic Year 2014-15 language study programs in the Balkans. The Balkan Language Initiative Program features language and cultural immersion in:
- Tirana, Albania
- Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Skopje, Macedonia
- Belgrade, Serbia

THE PROGRAM
The Balkan Language Initiative provides participants with intensive individualized instruction in the languages of the Balkans. Courses are designed to strengthen speaking, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in the language of study. Classes are conducted in small groups or private tutorials by native speakers with extensive experience teaching foreign students. In addition to classroom learning, American Councils emphasizes language immersion outside of the academic program through: volunteer opportunities, cultural excursions, extracurricular activities, and life with host families.
U.S. undergraduate or graduate credit is provided through Bryn Mawr College.

2012 Critical Languages Institute at Arizona State University
Arizona State University is pleased to announce that its CRITICAL LANGUAGES INSTITUTE is now accepting applications for the 2012 session.
CLI courses combine intensive language instruction in the U.S. with (optional) overseas immersion programs in 10 languages. Courses are tuition free for all participants and range from elementary to advanced mastery. Graduate and undergraduate funding is available for both U.S. and overseas study.
COURSE STRUCTURE:
MOST COURSES are offered in a 7+4 hybrid format: 7-weeks of instruction at ASU (June 4 – July 20; 8 credits) plus an optional 4-weeks of instruction overseas (July 23 – August 17; 3 credits). The two halves of the program share a single 11-week curriculum. Wherever possible, students study with the same instructors in both locations. The following courses are offered in this format:
- Albanian (Tirana; Levels 1, 2, 5)
- Armenian (Yerevan; Levels 1, 2, 5)
- Bosnian/Croatian/ Serbian (Sarajevo; Levels 1, 2)
- Farsi (Dushanbe, Levels 1, 2, 3)
- Hebrew (Tel Aviv, Level 1)
- Macedonian (Ohrid; Levels 1, 3)
- Polish (Poznan; Level 1)
- Russian (Kazan; Levels 1, 2)*
- Tajik (Dushanbe; Levels 1, 2, 3)
- Uzbek (Samarkand; Levels 1, 2, 3)
* Russian course dates are May 29 – July 20 (10 credits)
TATAR and ADVANCED RUSSIAN courses are offered in an 8-week program in Kazan, Russia (June 25 – August 17; 8 credits):
- Russian (Levels 3, 4 only)
- Tatar (Levels 1, 2)
STUDENT SUPPORT:
Graduate support is available for Arizona and overseas courses through the Department of State’s Title VIII program.
Undergraduate support is available for Arizona and overseas classes through the Melikian Scholars Award program, the Project GO ROTC training program, and ASU Tatar language travel grants.
All CLI participants may apply for overseas study support through ASU’s International Distinguished Engagement Award program.

Summer intensive study and study abroad for Balkan languages
The Critical Languages Institute at Arizona State University is offering intensive summer courses and summer study abroad programs for 11 languages and among them Albanian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and Macedonian.

Most CLI courses run 8 weeks in Arizona followed by an optional 3 weeks in country. Students receive 8-10 semester credits and can expect to make progress equivalent to 2 semesters' of regular language study.
CLI programs are tuition free and are FLAS eligible. CLI offers scholarships for selected languages. Class size is limited. Admission is competitive. Application deadline is March 1, 2010.

Bulgarian Language, Culture, and History Summer Program

The American University in Bulgaria invites high school and college students 15-20 years of age to a non-credit Summer Program on Bulgarian Language, Culture, and History (BLCH) in the town of Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.
The program includes Bulgarian language instruction at three levels, Bulgarian literature and history classes, workshops on culture and traditions, and teacher accompanied field trips to sites of historical and cultural interest. Sports, crafts, folklore dances, movie nights, cooking, and other activities make the program intensive and entertaining. The field trips will take the students to exciting destinations such as Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria; the Rila Monastery, included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites; Kazanlak, situated in the Valley of Roses and the Thracian kings; Veliko Turnovo, the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, and Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.
The BLCH Summer Program is designed in such a way that students who do not speak Bulgarian and/or have never been to the country can easily learn some basics of the language and get a first-hand experience of Bulgarian language, culture, traditions, and nature. Students who speak Bulgarian at an intermediate or higher level will improve their writing, reading, and conversational skills while gaining additional knowledge or filling some gaps in their knowledge of Bulgarian history and culture.
