News from the Bulgarian Studies Association: Creation of a new journal.

The Bulgarian Studies Association membership has just voted unanimously to amend the organization's constitution by adding publication of a Bulgarian Studies journal to the BSA's mission. SEESA Travel Grants: 20TH BIENNIAL CONFERENCE ON BALKAN AND SOUTH SLAVIC LINGUISTICS, LITERATURE & FOLKLORE

To support graduate student scholarship and international participation in the field of Southeast European Studies, the Southeast European Studies Association (SEESA) has established the SEESA Travel Grants to subsidize travel costs for presentation of papers at international, national, regional, or state conferences. In 2016 the grants will be awarded to graduate students for attendance and presentation at The 20th Biennial Conference on Balkan and South Slavic Linguistics, Literature and Folklore, which will take place at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT, USA, April 28-30, 2016.

SEESA plans to fund, on a competitive basis, at least 2 annual awards of $500 each.

Applicants must be graduate students at either the master's or doctoral level in any of the fields of Southeast European Studies.

Students may only receive one SEESA Graduate Student Travel Grant over the course of their graduate studies.

Applications for the 2016 grants are due to the selection committee by March 10, 2016. Applicants should submit their paper and a short biographical note as an email attachment to Bavjola Shatro [seesa.travel.grants@gmail.com]. Author name(s), affiliation(s), and contact information should be written below the title of the paper.

The applications will be evaluated by SEESA’S Committee for Travel Grants.

The Balkanist’s Balkanist: Papers Dedicated to Victor A. Friedman

Volume 28 of Balkanistica has been dedicated to Victor A. Friedman on the occasion of this eminent professor’s retirement in 2015. It honors his contributions to the field of Balkan studies.

In this volume, co-edited by Donald L. Dyer (University of Mississippi), Brian D. Joseph (The Ohio State University) and Christina E. Kramer (University of Toronto), are included 28 papers authored by distinguished scholars in the field who hail from universities around the world. The volume also features an introduction and a full bibliography of Friedman’s work, which includes over 250 articles, several of which were published in Balkanistica, one as early as the journal’s second volume in 1975.

Although the current issue is exceptionally large – at 645 pages it is much larger than any previous issue – it is nevertheless modest compared to the career-long contributions of Professor Friedman to Southeast European Studies. Among his many and varied accomplishments, he has served as President and Vice President of SEESA and is now a member of its executive board. He is also the current president of the U.S. Committee for AIESEE.

It will significantly enrich not only the archives of Balkanistica over the years to come as well as our own professional libraries, but it will also provide us with great satisfaction of knowing that these contributions have memorialized the amazing work of such a formidable scholar. Victor Friedman will no doubt continue to inspire and guide our own work for many years to come.

2015 Arizona State University Critical Languages Institute

The Arizona State University Critical Languages Institute is accepting applications for its 2015 summer language programs in the U.S. and abroad.

CLI offers intensive courses in Russian and in East European, Mediterranean, and Central Asian languages, either in the U.S., overseas, or if integrated “combination” courses that include both U.S. and overseas components.

Students selected for CLI pay a flat fee of $960 for up to 13 semester credits, plus study-abroad fees if they opt to join an overseas program.

Scholarships are available for undergraduate students, graduate students, and non-students. ROTC Project GO funding is available for selected languages.

Funding and priority admission deadline is January 30, 2015.
